NFC Notes: Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers, Saints

Buccaneers

  • Buccaneers OC Byron Leftwich told reporters on Thursday that he doesn’t think they’re dealing with a “chemistry issue” on offense and it comes down to them not making enough plays. (Rick Stroud)
  • Leftwich mentioned that RB LeSean McCoy is “always an option…we’ll see.” (Rick Stroud)
  • Leftwich explained that WR Scotty Miller’s limited involvement on offense has been due to hip and groin injuries, but they expect him to be more involved. (Jenna Laine)
  • According to the Athletic’s Greg Auman, both Buccaneers G Ali Marpet and CB Jamel Dean are in the concussion protocol. Marpet was able to practice while Dean was held out Thursday.
  • Buccaneers LT Donovan Smith (ankle) also missed practice Thursday.

Falcons

  • Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer notes Falcons owner Arthur Blank and team president Rich McKay have strong ties to the league office which could lead to a heavy focus on diversity in their search for a new general manager and head coach.

Panthers

  • Panthers HC Matt Rhule said Thursday that QB Teddy Bridgewater “looks ready to roll.” (Joe Person)
  • As for RB Christian McCaffrey, who is not expected to play against the Vikings, Rhule said there’s nothing new, but they plan to get him some reps: “Good to get him back out there.
  • Rhule mentioned that he’s hopeful LT Russell Okung (calf) can play this week, but they will continue to give Trent Scott practice reps in case Okung can’t play until after bye week. (Joe Person)

Saints

  • The Athletic’s Katherine Terrell writes Saints TE Jared Cook could be on shaky ground for 2021 because of his struggles this year. New Orleans drafted TE Adam Trautman in the third round this past April and could elect to roll with him as a cheaper starter given Cook’s deal is expiring and he turns 34 next year.
  • Terrell adds Saints P Thomas Morstead is struggling this year and that’s not good for a player whose $4.5 million cap hit in 2021 is the second-highest in the league at his position.
