NFC Notes: Deebo Samuel, Raheem Morris, John Harbaugh, 49ers, Giants

49ers

49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk is happy to have WR Deebo Samuel back in the fold, noting that he is a great friend as well as a great player.

“Deebo’s the best. He’s such an incredible teammate. He’s such a good friend. He’s an incredible football player,” Juszczyk said, via Pro Football Talk. “So we’re really happy to have him in the locker room just because he brings the best vibes, and positivity, but we’re also happy to have him on the field because he’s still got juice and he can still go out there and make big plays. He came in, he looks like he’s in phenomenal shape. His first day in pads he’s making an impact right way. He just looked like the old Deebo, so I can’t say enough positive things about how excited we are to have him.”

49ers

49ers QB Brock Purdy said new DC Raheem Morris has given the offense different looks and has made the defense tougher to attack.

Raheem’s done a good job of coaching up our DBs in terms of being sticky … and that match coverage, it’s real,” Purdy said, via The Athletic. “They’ve done a really good job with it. I think we have the right personnel on the defense to play that kind of defense.

49ers LB Fred Warner added that Morris’ use of five-man fronts and varied coverages is forcing the offense to adjust to unfamiliar looks.

Now we’re having some of those five-down looks, different coverages and things of that sort,” Warner said. “It’s new for all of us. We’ve all got to learn on my end, and obviously for them, they can’t just be like, ‘Oh, I know exactly what they’re running and let’s just book it up.’”

Morris said he is building the defense around San Francisco’s personnel and established culture rather than imposing a system that belongs solely to him.

The guys that we have on our roster are just obsessed,” Morris said. “They crave more information, they crave energy, they crave the ability to go out there and learn every single day. … This is not my defense. This is the defense we’re building that’s built for the Niners and what we’ve already had in place, what we’ve done or what they’ve done, what I want to be a part of and move forward from there.

Purdy said Morris’ disguised coverages are giving the offense valuable preparation for defensive looks it will encounter this season.

He gives us all these different kinds of looks, and the shell’s always changing,” Purdy said. “Raheem’s done a good job with trying to disguise things against the quarterback, but also the techniques that the DBs are playing with now, too. I feel like this is the kind of stuff that we’re starting to see more in the NFL. And so it gives us good reps. You’ve got to win your one-on-one matchups. … It’s been good work on both sides of the ball.

Giants

Giants QB Jaxson Dart was asked what defined HC John Harbaugh as a coach and cited his leadership abilities.

“The way that he carries himself as an individual, a man, it’s something you can really, really respect, day in and day out,” Dart said, via NFL Network. “The biggest thing is, he’s never trying to change anybody from who they are, but he’s putting out his culture, his plan, and it’s for us to buy into it. That’s really cool to have, when you have all these different guys coming in to a brand new system, who have different experiences, some of us being younger, a lot of the vets, but we’re all buying into the exact same plan because we trust him, because of how great of a coach he is and the man he is as well.”
