HC Jim Tomsula refuted rumors that a scuffle between Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick occurred prior to Smith’s release.

“Never. Nothing even close. Don’t know where that could even come from,” said Tomsula, via Cam Inman.

Browns

• Aaron Wilson reports that the Browns are signing rookie CB Joe Rankin.

Cowboys

• HC Jason Garrett said that RB Darren McFadden will not practice until after their preseason game against the Chargers, and that he will be limited to sideline routines until that time.
• CB Brandon Carr suffered a broken bone in his right hand at training camp, and will undergo surgery on Monday. (David Helman)
