NFL Notes: Backup QBs, Bengals, Cowboys & Lions

Backup QBs

John Clayton of ESPN writes that the NFL currently has a backup quarterback crisis.

A front office executive tells Clayton said he’s been waiting 10 years now for the NFL to create a developmental league that could give quarterbacks more playing to and help their odds of having an NFL career.

“I’ve been wanting a developmental league for 10 years,” the front office executive said. “I know the NFL has talked about having a developmental league, starting with a training camp in Florida. It is particularly important now for quarterbacks who are coming out of spread offenses and needing a lot of work to get ready for the NFL.

Bengals

  • Geoff Hobson reports that Bengals fourth-round DT Andrew Billings underwent an MRI Wednesday night on his knee.
  • However, Hobson says that there is “cautious optimism” and hope that Billings just suffered a cartilage tear at most.

Cowboys

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked by Jason Cole whether they should have cut DE Greg Hardy earlier the season last year.

“Well, if I had had a crystal ball and known we were not going to get [Tony] Romo back and only win four games…in hindsight, there’s a lot to consider here,” Jones said. “And I think it had a lot to do with the success Hardy had. Had we been a team that was contending, had we been a team that was in the Super Bowl hunt, you might have had a little more success with Hardy.”

Lions

Lions LB Jon Bostic suffered what appears to be a long-term leg injury during Wednesday’s practice.

“It’s not a couple day thing, that’s for certain,” Lions HC Jim Caldwell said of Bostic’s injury, via the Detroit News.
