NFL Notes: Browns, Jets, Patriots, Redskins, & Steelers

Here are some interesting notes from Jason La Canfora’s most recent article:

Browns

  • La Canfora isn’t reading too much into Johnny Manziel‘s performance in the first preseason game and doesn’t see any way he’ll see game action to start the regular season, barring a Josh McCown injury.

Jets

  • According to La Canfora, the Jets will likely take their time signing a backup quarterback.
  • The Jets reportedly have some interest in veteran QB Matt Flynn, as well as some other veteran quarterbacks who are likely to be cut in the next few weeks.
  • New York would still like to see what rookie QB Bryce Petty can do with more opportunities during the preseason.

Patriots

  • La Canfora can see the Patriots franchising LT Nate Solder next year, due to demands of the left tackle market.
  • In regards to Tom Brady and his suspension, La Canfora says that the Patriots “genuinely have no idea what to expect from any Tom Brady court ruling, so they must prepare as if Brady is possibly gone for four games.

Redskins

  • La Canfora wouldn’t be surprised if the Redskins ultimately ended up using their franchise tag on LT Trent Williams next year, as the asking price from left tackles is reportedly very high.

Steelers

  • On the topic of Steelers WR Antonio Brown and possible reworked contract, La Canfora reports that there were no contract talks between the two sides, and the idea of Brown getting a new deal right now was “never realistic.”
  • Instead, La Canfora mentions that things could change next year for Brown.
