Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston reports that the Patriots have had a single conversation about pursuing a trade for Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson, despite recent reports that they were interested.
Curran explains that the Patriots’ lack of interest isn’t due to Peterson’s ability and is instead related to the Patriots’ current cap situation, which makes a trade for the star cornerback not feasible.
New England recently restructured CB Stephon Gilmore‘s contract to create cap space, but Curran says that this was likely a move to give them some breathing room to work with over the remainder of the season.
The Saints and Eagles were also mentioned as teams to watch for Peterson, but that was before New Orleans traded for Eli Apple.
It’s worth mentioning that the Cardinals have publicly said that they’re not interested in trading Peterson, even though he reportedly requested a trade out of Arizona.
Peterson, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2011. He’s currently in the fifth year of his seven-year, $83.02 million that included $48 million guaranteed and set to make base salaries of $11 million over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Peterson has appeared in six games for the Cardinals and recorded 29 tackles, one sack, an interception, a fumble recovery and two pass defenses.
We’ll have more regarding Peterson as the news is available.
