Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie’s Job Appears To Be Safe

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that it appears as though Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie’s job is safe as of now.

  • Ian Rapoport confirms the news and adds that owner Mark Davis mentioned that McKenzie will be involved with in head coach interviews that will start on Monday.
  • Rapoport adds that McKenzie still has another two years remaining on his five-year contract, which makes it more difficult for Oakland to fire him.

Earlier in the day, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that McKenzie’s job could come down to whether or not they are able to land Jim Harbaugh as their next head coach.

The thinking is that Harbaugh would prefer to bring in his own head coach, but if they lose out to the University of Michigan, Oakland could keep McKenzie for another year and target some other coaching options.

La Canfora mentions that Broncos DC Jack Del Rio and Arizona DC Todd Bowles could both be on the Raiders’ radar.

McKenzie did put together a solid 2014 draft class that has shown a good amount of promise this year, but it would likely take another impressive group of rookies, and better results in free agency for him to be a long-term option.

We’ll have more updates as the news is available.
