Redskins Looking To Redshirt Rookie QB Dwayne Haskins This Year?

Update:

Dianna Russini says she’s spoken to Washington many times about rookie QB Dwayne Haskins and it’s always the same “he’s not ready…not even close.”

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, there is a “strong sense” among some close to Redskins rookie QB Dwayne Haskins and members of the team’s coaching staff that it would be best for his long-term development to redshirt this year.

La Canfora says that Hasking started just one season at Ohio State and was surrounded by superior talent. However, in Washington, they have serious offensive line issues and are without their projected starter at running back and tight end.

Sources close to Haskins have expressed to Redskins officials how “potentially dire the current situation” could be for a rookie quarterback and have expressed their belief that it could be detrimental to him in both the short and long term to have him play in these current conditions, according to La Canfora.

La Canfora writes that owner Daniel Snyder and others in the organization will want to get a look at the top pick sooner rather than later if the season continues to go poorly for Washington.

Redskins HC Jay Gruden reportedly views playing Haskins anytime soon as only a last resort and is a strong proponent of Colt McCoy, who just recently returned to practice from injury.

Even so, sources tell La Canfora that Haskins is eager to play as soon as possible and is doing everything possible to get on the field.

Haskins, 22, was selected by the Redskins with the No. 14 overall pick after many believed he would end up being a top-10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. According to OverTheCap.com, Haskins receives a four-year, $14,416,600 rookie contract that includes $8,504,800 signing bonus.

Haskins’ contract includes a fifth-year option for the Redskins to pick up in 2022.

During his college career, Haskins threw for 5,145 yards while completing 70.2 percent of his passes to go along with 51 touchdowns and nine interceptions .over the course of two seasons and 21 games. He also rushed for 208 yards and four touchdowns.
