Report: Chargers Releasing CB Derek Cox

Michael Gehlken reports that the Chargers have informed CB Derek Cox that he will be released on Tuesday.

There has been some speculation that Cox could be on the chopping block after a disastrous first year in San Diego.

Cox, 27, signed a four-year contract worth $20 million that included $10.25 million guaranteed with the Chargers a year ago. He had a $4.25 million base salary coming his way next season to go along with a cap figure of $5.55 million.

  • The Chargers will save $1.65 million in cap space with this move.

He totaled 38 tackles and an interception over the course of 16 games with the Chargers.

San Diego also released FB Le’Ron McClain earlier in the day, which add another $2.5 million to their available cap space for this offseason.
