Report: Jay Gruden Didn’t Want Redskins To Draft QB Dwayne Haskins

Les Carpenter of Washington Post, citing a person with knowledge of Redskins HC Jay Gruden’s thinking, reports that he did not want the team to draft QB Dwayne Haskins

A person close to Haskins tells Carpenter that the rookie quarterback has sensed that he wasn’t Gruden’s choice at quarterback.

While Gruden may not have wanted Haskins, Carpenter says the Redskins coaches were reportedly excited about their rookie quarterback.

Gruden put Haskins in the game last week with Case Keenum dealing with an injury and Colt McCoy inactive. However, Haskins wound up throwing three interceptions in a loss.

Redskins owner Dan Synder reportedly “stormed out of New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium following the Redskins’ loss to the Giants.”

A source knowledge of the situation told Carpenter after the draft that Snyder was willing to let the coaches be patient with Haskins, realizing that Haskins needed time to grow.

It’s clear that the Redskins’ coaching believes Haskins needs more time to develop and get a handle on playing quarterback in the NFL and Haskins himself has said he has time to figure things out.

“You just got to make the most of every opportunity. … This is my first year in the NFL and I have plenty more to go, and it’s just one steppingstone,” Haskins said.

Haskins, 22, was selected by the Redskins with the No. 14 overall pick after many believed he would end up being a top-10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. According to OverTheCap.com, Haskins receives a four-year, $14,416,600 rookie contract that includes $8,504,800 signing bonus.

Haskins’ contract includes a fifth-year option for the Redskins to pick up in 2022.

In 2019, Haskins has appeared in one game and completed 9 of 17 pass attempts for 107 yards and three interceptions. He also rushed for 23 yards.

During his college career, Haskins threw for 5,145 yards while completing 70.2 percent of his passes to go along with 51 touchdowns and nine interceptions .over the course of two seasons and 21 games. He also rushed for 208 yards and four touchdowns.
