Report: Jets Exercise DE Muhammad Wilkerson’s Fifth-Year Option

Ian Rapoport reports that the Jets have exercised DE Muhammad Wilkerson‘s fifth-year extension.

Wilkerson, 24, will make just $1.2 million for 2014 season, so he is clearly in line for a massive contract after getting off to a great start to his NFL career.

The 2015 option will run them close to $6 million for the 2015 season, which is a very reasonable salary for a player of his ability.

In his first three seasons in the NFL, Wilkerson has totaled 116 tackles, 18.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and an interception.

The price of top-tier defensive ends continues to climb, so it will be interesting to see the contracts handed out to the 2011 class of pass rushers including J.J. Watt, Aldon Smith, Robert Quinn and of course Wilkerson.
