Patriots OL Coach Dante Scarnecchia Retires

Update:

Patriots OL coach Dante Scarnecchia confirmed that he is, in fact, retiring from the NFL.

“I’m 72 years old, I feel like it’s time,” Scarnecchia said, per Ian Rapoport. “It’s been an unbelievable career, I would’ve never expected anything close to this. We’ve been blessed for a 1000 different reasons.”

Per WEEI’s Christian Fauria, Patriots OL coach Dante Scarnecchia has retired from football for the second time.

NBC Sports’ Phil Perry confirms Fauria’s report. Fauria adds the Patriots are expected to make an internal promotion to fill Scarnecchia’s position.

Scarnecchia is widely respected and regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in the league, so this is a big loss for the Patriots.

Scarnecchia, 71, got his start in coaching in 1970 with California Western University. He made the leap to the NFL in 1982 with the Patriots as a special teams and tight ends coach.

Aside from a two-year stint as an OL coach with the Colts, Scarnecchia has spent his entire career in New England. He has been the offensive line coach since 2000, and after retiring in 2013 he returned in the same role in 2016.
