Steelers OT Jerald Hawkins suffered a left knee injury during Wednesday’s OTA practice, according to Ray Fittipaldo of the Post-Gazette.

Hawkins was reportedly helped to the locker room by the Steelers’ training staff. As of now, Fittipaldo says that the extent of Hawkins’ knee injury is unknown, but his teammates indicated that it could be a severe injury.

“I didn’t see it at all,” Steelers G Ramon Foster said. “I just heard him screaming.

“It’s tough, but it’s part of it,” Foster added. “Every year, it’s going to be somebody. You just hope it’s not somebody who is super significant. I don’t know the full details of it, but he did get carried off so we’ll wait to see what the medical report is.

Hawkins was in position to compete for the Steelers’ swing tackle job after they lost Chris Hubbard in free agency.

Hawkins, 24, is a former fourth-round pick of the Steelers back in 2016. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $2.87 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $630,000 and $720,000 over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Hawkins appeared in five games for the Steelers.

We’ll have more regarding Hawkins’ injury as the news is available.
