The Kamerion Wimbley Situation In Oakland

If there’s one thing that you guarantee each and every offseason, it was that the Oakland Raiders would make at least one crazy move. So far, the Raiders have cut CB Standford Routt which qualifies as a surprise but the problem is that this move actually has some logic to it.

Last year the Raiders chose to franchise OLB Kamerion Wimbley and later resigned him to a $48 million dollar deal that included a staggering $29 million in guarantees but Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times reports that the Raiders can get out of this deal by releasing him and paying him $6.5 million.

This was the strategy that new GM Reggie McKenzie chose to take regarding Routt so it can’t be ruled out as a possibility, especially when you consider that Wimbley has said that he’s not willing to renegotiate his current deal.

If Wimbley becomes available, he would quickly become one of the best available pass rushers on the open market considering that this year’s group of outside linebackers is rather limited.
