Vikings Waive/Injured DE Hercules Mata’afa, Sign LB Mike Needham

The Minnesota Vikings announced Wednesday that they’ve signed waived rookie DE Hercules Mata’afa with an injury designation and signed rookie LB Mike Needham to a contract.

Should Mata’afa clear waivers tomorrow, he would revert to the Vikings’ injured serve list.

A few weeks ago, Mata’afa suffered a torn ACL during offseason workouts.

Mata’afa had reportedly impressed the Vikings’ coaching staff as a pass rusher and some coaches thought he had an inside track to make the team before the injury.

Mata’afa wound up signing on with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State last month.

During his college career at Washington State, Mata’afa recorded 121 tackles, 45.5 tackles for a loss, 21 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two recoveries over the course of 34 games.

We’ll have more regarding Mata’afa as the news is available.
