49ers Sign TE Wes Saxton, Waive CB C.J. Goodwin

The San Francisco 49ers have signed TE Wes Saxton to a contract on Tuesday and waived CB C.J. Goodwin.

Saxton, 24, wound up going undrafted out of South Alabama back in 2015. He was on and off of the Jets’ practice squad during his rookie season before returning to the team on a futures contract in 2016.

After he was once again cut loose coming out of the preseason, Saxton signed on to the Redskins’ practice squad where he remained for the entire season. Washington re-signed him to a futures contract before waiving him after last year’s draft.

Saxton had a brief stint with the Bills, but sat out the entire 2017 season. The Lions signed him to a contract last month before waiving him a few weeks later.

In 2015, Saxton appeared in one game for the Jets but did not record a statistic.

Goodwin, 28, originally signed on with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of California of Pennsylvania back in 2014. He bounced on and off their practice squad before signing on with the Falcons’ practice squad.

Atlanta decided to cut him shortly after signing him to a futures contract and was claimed off of waivers by the Cardinals back in December of last year. Arizona tendered him a one-year contract as an exclusive rights free agent but waived a few weeks ago.

Goodwin was later claimed off of waivers by the Giants before being cut loose back in May. The 49ers elected to claim off waivers.

In 2017, Goodwin appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals and recorded nine tackles and no interceptions.
