49ers HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday that they plan to open extension talks with LB Fred Warner at some point in the near future.
“Fred is a guy I plan on being here forever… I’d be surprised if that doesn’t start here sooner than later,” Shanahan said, per Nick Wagoner.
Warner is one of the best young linebackers in the NFL and could end up topping Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner‘s three-year, $54,000,000 contract that included $40,250,000 guaranteed when all is said and done.
Warner, 24, was drafted by the 49ers in the third round out of BYU in 2018. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $3.979 million deal and is set to make a base salary of $3,384,000 in 2020.
Warner is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2022.
In 2020, Warner appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers and recorded 125 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, a forced fumble, two recoveries and six passes defended.
We have him included in our Top 50 – 2022 Free Agents list.
