AFC Notes: Bills, Jets, Titans

Bills

  • Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN says that the Bills will keep QB Matt Barkley on the roster in 2020, as rookie Jake Fromm is not ready to be the backup to Josh Allen at this point in time.
  • Veteran RB T.J. Yeldon is likely to be inactive due to the arrival of rookie RB Zack Moss, according to Louis-Jacques.
  • Despite the fact that he may see limited action of offense, veteran WR Andre Roberts is to remain as the kick returner for the Bills due to the fact that he was Pro Bowler as a returner in 2019.
  • Louis-Jacques writes that second-year TE Dawson Knox is poised for a breakout season and that veteran G Darryl Williams is a former All-Pro who could also reemerge as a flexible backup at both tackle and guard.
  • The Bills are also stacked at cornerback with TreDavious White manning the No. 1 spot, and Taron Johnson starting at nickel corner. The second spot will be a fierce battle between veterans Josh Norman, Levi Wallace, and E.J. Gaines.

Jets

  • ESPN’s Rich Cimini says Jets RB Trenton Cannon‘s ability as a gunner on special teams should go a long way toward helping him make the roster as a No. 4 back.
  • Cimini thinks there’s a strong chance the Jets make more additions to their receiving corps, either via trade or by signing a veteran.
  • Cimini projects both Jets TEs Trevon Wesco and Daniel Brown on the final roster, but notes neither are locks to make the team.
  • Former Jets third-round DT Nathan Shepherd is firmly on the bubble, per Cimini, as the Jets are deep on the defensive line and Shepherd hasn’t established himself.
  • Cimini notes Jets LB Avery Williamson could be a trade candidate if he shows he’s back to full health after an ACL tear last preseason.
  • He adds Jets EDGE Jordan Jenkins is the only roster lock at edge rusher and Jets GM Joe Douglas won’t hesitate to pull the trigger on an upgrade. New York is interested to see what EDGE Tarell Basham can do in a larger role.
  • Cimini doesn’t think Jets CB Nate Hairston‘s place on the roster is safe.
  • Cimini projects Jets K Sam Ficken will win the camp battle versus K Brett Maher for the starting job, though neither are compelling options on paper.
