AFC Notes: Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders

Broncos

Broncos RB Melvin Gordon said he isn’t sweating about his playing time right now, despite the team drafting RB Javonte Williams in the second round.

“I’m very confident, man,” Gordon said, via ESPN’s Jeff Legwold. “… I’m just going to go out there and just do my job and compete. Wherever the cards fall, they fall. I can’t really worry about that too much. I know that’s kind of the talk. The media is making it Javonte versus Melvin. Who’s going to start? This and that. It’s not really about that.”

Gordon added that both Williams and RB Mike Boone have been welcome additions to the running back room.

“We’re competing, but it’s early, and we still have a lot of work to do,” Gordon said. “I think both of them have really good feet and good hands. I think they’re going to be — we could all be special. We’re definitely going to come out here and compete. … You can tell Boone been in the league for a while, and you can tell that Javonte has potential. We’re going to grow as a group, and we’re looking to be the best running back group in the league.”

Chiefs

Chiefs’ HC Andy Reid commented on what veteran RB Jerick McKinnon can bring to Kansas City in terms of both a running back and a leader. Reid also expects McKinnon to be effective as a receiver out of the backfield for the team.

“Well, he’s experienced,” Reid said, via ChiefsWire.com. “He’s been doing this a while and he does it well. I mean, these were passing camps more than running camps, but he sure has a nice feel of the passing game and I look forward to giving him the whole package once we get up there and let’s see what he can do once we get playing real football.”

Raiders

Raiders DL Quinton Jefferson said DE Yannick Ngakoue has added some weight in muscle over the offseason.

He has gotten huge,” Jefferson said, via Vic Tafur of The Athletic. “This is going to be fun.”

Ngakoue said he has a close relationship with Jefferson given their time together at the University of Maryland and thinks the veteran defensive lineman is an “under the radar” player.

“That’s like a brother to me,” Ngakoue said. “He’s going to bring a lot of tenacity to this defense. He’s slept on, he’s under the radar. I feel like he’s really going to show a lot of flashes.”

Jefferson believes Ngakoue will help free up DE Maxx Crosby on the opposite end.

“Yannick is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL right now and he brings that intensity,” Jefferson said. “He is going to bring some pressure and help relieve Maxx (Crosby), free Maxx up so that other teams can’t key on one guy. And then hopefully I can bring some interior pressure as well, so we should have a good mix out there. I am excited to see how that all comes together.”
