AFC Notes: Jaguars, Jets, Patriots

Jaguars

  • Jay Glazer of FOX reported on the pregame show that things were fine between Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey and HC Doug Marrone following last week’s loss in Houston.
  • However, a conversation with president Tom Coughlin did not go well and ultimately led to Ramsey requesting a trade.

  • Glazer said that Jaguars owner Shad Khan is working to improve things with Ramsey.

Jets

  • ESPN’s Rich Cimini expects Jets CB Trumaine Johnson to be a name thrown around near the trade deadline, however, Johnson’s fully-guaranteed $6.6 million salary following Week 3 makes it unlikely a team will send even a late-round pick to the Jets.
  • Cimini adds that if Jets HC Adam Gase is truly running a meritocracy, then C Ryan Kalil‘s leash as the starter might be getting short.
  • Kalil was already benched for a portion of Monday night’s game for C Jonotthan Harrison. Harrison was projected as the starter entering the year until the Jets lured Kalil out of retirement.

Patriots

  • Ian Rapoport reports that Patriots WR Julian Edelman suffered a rib injury during Sunday’s game, but the good news is that X-Rays were negative.
  • Tom Pelissero adds that there’s “cautious optimism” regarding Edelman’s rib injury.
  • Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Patriots CB Devin McCourty said having former players Jerod Mayo and Troy Brown on the staff as coaches has been a huge help: “You talk about some of the film we see, and some of the big games, and now to get a hands-on [teaching on] not only techniques but understanding their mentality and how they viewed things has been awesome. That knowledge is so valuable, to soak that in.”
  • Patriots OL coach Dante Scarnecchia had high praise for C Ted Karras, filling in for injured starter David Andrews for the rest of the season: “We could not be any more fortunate than to have a guy like that who can play all three of those positions and the wheels don’t come off the offense. He’s a good worker, a tough guy, he has character. Maybe he doesn’t have quite the skill as some guys, but you’re going to get everything this guy has. That’s all we care about. We’ll be fine.”
  • Reiss mentions the Patriots looked into trading for OL Caleb Benenoch at the end of the preseason before being able to sign him following his release from Tampa Bay last week.
