AFC Notes: Johnathan Abram, Raiders, Texans

Johnathan Abram

Oakland DC Paul Guenther mentioned that first-round S Johnathan Abram is “wise beyond his years.

“I just think he’s wise beyond his years,” Guenther said, via Josh Dubow of the Associated Press. “He doesn’t act like a rookie. When he’s out there, he sounds like a seven or eight-year vet. I think the players take notice of that. Just how he prepares, how he studies, how he communicates with the guys on and off the field. The thing is not too big for him. The players see that. He doesn’t act like your typical rookie.

Raiders

  • Raiders HC Jon Gruden explained that Gruden said RB Doug Martin is dealing with a shoulder issue, which is why he was placed on injured reserve Sunday. (Scott Bair)
  • Gruden said he is really excited about the addition of veteran DT Corey Liuget. (Vic Tafur)
  • Raiders DT Justin Ellis has a knee injury, but they hope he can be back by the regular season opener. (Scott Bair)

Texans

Texans HC Bill O’Brien was asked about the status of holdout OLB Jadeveon Clowney

“Until he comes in and signs the tender, really the ball’s in his court relative to playing for the Texans and all those things, just like it’s been since the beginning of training camp,” O’Brien said, via Pro Football Talk. “He’s a franchise player, and so, until he comes and signs the tender, really there’s nothing else to talk about.”

“I think I spoke to him a few times since the end of our season,” O’Brien said. “All the conversations have been good conversations. Very professional conversations, but I don’t have any idea of any specific date of when he will decide he wants to be here.
