Davis Webb enters his first year as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator and playcaller. Webb thinks he’s benefited from being around successful offensive coaches like Rams assistant HC Kliff Kingsbury, Titans OC Brian Daboll, former Giants HC Ben McAdoo, Chargers passing game coordinator Adam Gase, and Lions passing game coordinator Mike Kafka. 

“I’ve been blessed my whole life to be around a lot of good coaches,” Webb said, via BroncosWire. “Kliff Kingsbury, Brian Daboll, Ben McAdoo was hot for a while, especially early in my [playing] career. I’ve been with Adam Gase, I’ve been with Mike Kafka and then the best one I’ve been with is upstairs, gold jacket, Hall of Fame head coach, play caller, culture builder.”

Webb adds that learning from Sean Payton has also been extremely beneficial to him as a coach. 

“So for the last three years, sitting next to him in every single staff meeting, every single offensive game plan meeting has rubbed off in a lot of ways. He was great that day [that I called plays], and it’s been a really good start thus far.”

Chiefs

Apart from the enormous bionic-looking brace on his leg, there have been few signs that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is less than eight months removed from surgery on a torn ACL. He has been doing everything in camp so far — taking his usual share of the reps, participating in all the drills and doing usual Mahomes things like scrambling and running. 

“He looks like Pat Mahomes,” Chiefs DT Chris Jones said via ESPN’s Dan Graziano. “It doesn’t look like anything’s changed. He’s jumping around, being Pat. We’ve just got to get it going.”

“He’s really doing everything that he normally does, and doing it well,” HC Andy Reid added. “We’re just keeping an eye on him and letting the doctors guide us from there. As long as he’s safe, that’s what we’re looking at. So right now, for what we’re doing, he’s safe to roll.”

Raiders

Raiders first-round QB Fernando Mendoza had his roughest practice of camp over the weekend, throwing his first interception and generally looking out of sync.

However, Raiders HC Klint Kubiak brought some perspective, noting that at this stage they are just looking for Mendoza to be on an upward trajectory, and he checked that box by rebounding later in the practice.

Kubiak didn’t have to spell this out specifically, but it’s also why Las Vegas has been so doggedly committed to easing Mendoza in while veteran QB Kirk Cousins leads the way for the time being. 

“There’s gonna be ups and downs,” Kubiak said via the Athletic’s Sam Warren. “What player can get the rest of the other 10 players playing at their best, that’s what we’re looking for. There will never be a perfect game or a perfect practice. But I think he’s doing a good job. I don’t expect him to be perfect right now.”
