AFC West Notes: Khalil Mack, Broncos, Raiders

Khalil Mack

  • According to Albert Breer, it’s unlikely that an NFL team would trade the kind of draft capital it would take to land Khalil Mack without some sort of assurance that he’d be doing a long-term deal in his new home.
  • Breer adds that while a new team could always franchise Mack, it’s unlikely he would report to the team without a long-term deal in place.
  • Breer admits that it’s possible there’s a team out there willing to trade a first-round pick and still pay Mack $20 million per year with $60 million fully guaranteed.
  • Teams have reportedly reached out to the Raiders regarding Mack, but Breer says that their inquiries have been “quickly met with a no.

Broncos

  • Mike Klis reports that the Broncos signed ILB Alexander Johnson to a three-year contract that includes a $35,000 signing bonus and $15,000 of his $480,000 minimum salary guaranteed.
  • According to Klis, Johnson will make minimum base salaries of $570,000 nonguaranteed in 2019 and $660,000 nonguaranteed in 2020.
  • Klis notes that the $50,000 guaranteed Johnson got could be an undrafted rookie record for the franchise.

Raiders

Jon Gruden tells Peter King of Football Morning in America that he isn’t actually making $100 million from the Raiders, as had been previously reported.

“I’m not making $100 million, just so you know,” Gruden said. “Well, I never thought Tom Cruise, never thought his movies were any good but he’s making plenty of money,” Gruden said. “There’s a lot of things that I don’t understand. No disrespect to Tom Cruise. I’m sure he’s a great actor. But you know what? You just go about your life as hard as you can. You try to find something you love and you do the best you can at it. I never got into coaching for the money. I got into coaching because I wanted to be a quarterback coach. What the salary cap has become, what free agency has become — it’s amazing.”

  • Vic Tafur mentions that “all signs point to” Raiders S Obi Melifonwu being placed on injured reserve at the start of the season.
