Bills Not Ready To Consider A QB Change

The Buffalo Bills put together a miserable performance on Sunday as they wound up losing 45-3 to the San Francisco 49ers. Buffalo wasn’t expected to win this game, but it’s hardly an encouraging sign when your team gives up a staggering 621 total yards, which includes over 300 yards on the ground.

While a lot of the Bills issues rest with the team’s defense, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was unable to get things going throughout the game. He completed 16-for-26 passes for 126 yards and one interception. Considering how bad the Bills lost, these number are not as bad as you would have expected, but they’re hardly an encouraging sign for the team moving forward.

“We’re just fine there,” said head coach Chan Gailey when asked about the quarterback position, via the Buffalo News. “Don’t go with an issue on that. That’s not an issue.

Heading into Sunday’s game, Fitzpatrick had the most TD’s in the NFL this season, and when you consider that Tyler Thigpen is currently their No. 2 quarterback, it’s probably better to stick with Fitzpatrick until he forces them to make a change. Buffalo added Tarvaris Jackson via a trade with the Seahawks a few months ago, but he’s currently listed as their No. 3 quarterback, which is an obvious indication that he’s not comfortable in their system yet.

The Bills gave Fitzpatrick a staggering seven-year deal worth $62.195 million and includes $24 million guaranteed, but he hasn’t lived up to expectations to this point. It will be interesting to see what the Bills elect to do during the offseason, especially if Fitzpatrick continues to struggle this season.

  1. Fitzpatrick has to go!! He is NOT a franchise QB and will never be one. Go out in the 2013 Draft and get a QB! Matt Barkley, Geno Smith, Tyler Wilson, Tyler Bray all very respectable picks for the Bills in the first round. Then in the second round get him a young, speedy WR to play opposite of Stevie Johnson (i.e- DeAndre Hopkins or Tavon Austin). Then in the third round go get a real, nasty Mike Linebacker (i.e- Kevin Reddick, Nico Johnson, Shayne Skov, Kevin Minter). That should be the first three rounds of the Bills 2013 Draft

    • That’s a fair point. Creating a better overall roster would alleviate some of the pressure on Fitzpatrick, but you have to wonder if this guy can truly be a difference-maker for them.
