Bengals Fire DC Teryl Austin

Update:

The Cincinnati Bengals officially announced that they’ve fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

Here’s a statement from Bengals HC Marvin Lewis regarding the move:

“I appreciate the hard work that Coach Austin has put into our football team, but I felt it best to make a change at this point in time, and I wish him the best. I will be coordinating the defense from here on out and I am excited to do that. This football team has a real chance to get back to playing winning football so we can compete for the playoffs, and that is our sole focus.

Josina Anderson is reporting that the Bengals have relieved defensive coordinator Teryl Austin of his duties on Monday.

  • Adam Schefter reports that Marvin Lewis will be assuming the Bengals’ defensive coordinator responsibilities.

This comes less than a day after the Saints put 51 points on the Bengals, who were playing at home.

The Bengals are in the midst of a terrible stretch in which the defense has allowed three straight games of 500 yards of offense and given up 45, 34 and 51 points.

Austin, 53, began his NFL coaching career with the Seahawks back in 2003 as their defensive backs coach. He had stints with the Cardinals and Ravens before the Lions hired him as their defensive coordinator back in 2014.

After the Lions made the decision to move on from Austin after hiring Matt Patricia as head coach, he quickly signed on with the Bengals.

In 2018, the Bengals ranked No. 32 in yards allowed, No. 31 in points allowed, No. 31 in rushing yards allowed and No. 32 in passing yards allowed.
