Browns Have Been In Contact With Safeties Eric Berry & Tre Boston

Browns GM John Dorsey told reporters (per Nate Ulrich) on Monday that he’s been in contact with the agents for free agent safeties Eric Berry and Tre Boston.

Berry came up as a potential trade option for the Browns before the Chiefs recently cut him loose, so it’s not all that surprising to hear that they have some interest.

As for Boston, he has ties to new DC Steve Wilks from their time together with the Cardinals last season.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Berry to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Berry, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2010. He worked his way back from Hodgkin’s lymphoma and managed to produce an impressive 2015 season.

Berry played out his rookie contract with the team before receiving the team’s franchise tag last year. However, the two parties ultimately agreed to a new six-year, $78 million contract that includes $29.8 million guaranteed.

Berry was set to make base salaries of $12.4 million and $9.4 million over the next two years when the Chiefs released him with a post-June 1 designation.

In 2018, Berry appeared in two games and recorded 11 tackles and no interceptions for the Chiefs.

Boston, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Panthers back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $2,625,468 contract when the Panthers cut him in 2017.

Boston later caught on with the Chargers shortly after the 2017 draft and agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals lat summer.

In 2018, Boston appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals and recorded 79 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble and nine pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 24 safety out of 93 qualifying players.
