Browns Sign QB Matt Blanchard To Practice Squad

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Browns have signed former Packers QB Matt Blanchard to their practice squad on Tuesday.

  • The Browns released OT Erie Ladson from their practice squad to make room for Blanchard.

This comes after starter Josh McCown sustained a concussion in Week 1’s loss to the Jets. On top of that, Johnny Manziel has been dealing with an elbow issue for the past few weeks, so it can’t hurt to have another quarterback available.

In recent weeks, Blanchard had worked out for the Eagles and Jaguars.

Blanchard, 26, originally signed on with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Whitewater back in May of 2012. He spent his first year on the team’s practice before he was waived at the start of the 2013 season.

The Packers wound up signing him to a contract before this year’s draft, only to use a fifth-round pick on Brett Hundley, which left Blanchard as the odd-man-out in Green Bay was roster cuts were made.

During his time at Wisconsin-Whitewater, he led the team to three Division III national titles.

Blanchard has yet to appear in an NFL game.
