Chargers Likely To Franchise TE Hunter Henry If They Can’t Get Deal Done Before Deadline

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers would “love” to get a long-term extension done with TE Hunter Henry.

However, if they can’t get an agreement in place with Henry before the upcoming tag deadline, Rapoport says they will likely franchise him.

Reports have said for a few weeks now that Henry was someone to watch for the franchise tag, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

The franchise tag for tight ends is projected to be a little over $11 million, per Over The Cap.

Henry is considered among the top free-agent tight ends this year despite an extensive injury history. He missed nearly all of the 2018 season following a torn ACL during OTA’s and missed four games with a knee injury in 2019.

Henry, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2016. He just finished his four-year, $6.38 million contract that included $3.98 million guaranteed and made a base salary of $1.32 million over the final year of the agreement.

In 2019, Henry appeared in 12 games for the Chargers and caught 55 passes for 652 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 12 tight end out of 67 qualifying players.

We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
