Concerns Browns’ Ownership Could Once Again Be Involved In HC Search

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that there is trepidation by many in the coaching community about the Browns’ looming head-coaching search and repeated failings of the organization.

Recent reports have said that ownership is expected to allow GM John Dorsey to oversee the coaching search, but the Haslams’ reputation in coaching circles has many wondering about who will ultimately select the next coach.

According to La Canfora, there’s even some skepticism within the Browns building about how the process will unfold.

In 2016, when the Haslams made the decision to hire Hue Jackson, La Canfora says they did so against the wishes and counsel of virtually their entire football operations staff.

Interestingly enough, La Canfora mentions that Sean McDermott, current Bills head coach, was the “overwhelmingly popular” choice by everyone involved in the process. In fact, La Canfora adds the data they used along with their other criteria set up at the start of the process all pointed to McDermott being the best hire.

According to La Canfora, former GM Sashi Brown and CSO Paul DePodesta both made impassioned attempts to dissuade the Haslams from not following that process, but they instead hired Jackson.

We’ll have more regarding the Browns’ head-coaching search as the news is available.
