Eagles Restructure OT Lane Johnson’s Contract, Free Up $8.2M Of Cap Room

Adam Caplan reports that the Eagles have restructured OT Lane Johnson‘s contract on Tuesday for some cap relief.

  • Field Yates reports that the Eagles specifically converted $10.045 million of Johnson’s base salary into a signing bonus. He’ll now make $805,000 for the 2019 season and Philadelphia gains $8.2 million of cap space.

The Eagles entered this offseason in a tough cap situation, so moves like this were expected before the start of free agency next week.

Johnson, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Eagles back in 2013. He had one year remaining on his four-year, $19.853 million rookie contract when the Eagles elected to sign him to a five-year extension worth $56.26 million that can max out at $60.01 million based on Pro Bowl escalators back in 2016.

Johnson was set to make base salaries of $10.6 million and $8,835,000 over the next two years of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, the Eagles can create up to $6,696,667 by reworking Johnson’s contract.

In 2018, Johnson appeared in 15 games for the Eagles.
