Falcons Sign OL Tommy Doles, Place QB Kurt Benkert On Injured Reserve

The Falcons announced Tuesday they’ve placed backup QB Kurt Benkert on injured reserve and signed OL Tommy Doles to take his place on the active roster.

Benkert was competing to be the Falcons backup quarterback this year after spending his rookie year in 2018 on the practice squad.

Benkert, 24, signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia in 2018. He was waived by the team coming out of the preseason but later re-signed to Atlanta’s practice squad.

Benkert re-signed with the Falcons on a futures deal for the 2019 season.

Benkert has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game.

Doles, 23, wound up going undrafted out of Northwestern this year. He later signed on with the Bears and agreed to a three-year, $1.755 million contract.

However, Chicago elected to waive Doles earlier this offseason.

A senior captain, Doles appeared in 13 games and made 11 starts at right guard for Northwestern.
