Franchise Tag In Play For Chargers TE Hunter Henry?

According to Ian Rapoport, the franchise tag is now an option for Chargers TE Hunter Henry following the team’s announcement it would part ways with QB Philip Rivers

Rivers had been the other prominent pending Chargers free agent who could have received the tag to prevent them from reaching free agency. Los Angeles is now free to tag Henry and extend its negotiating window.

The franchise tag for tight ends is projected to be a little over $11 million, per Over The Cap.

Henry is considered among the top free-agent tight ends this year despite an extensive injury history. He missed nearly all of the 2018 season following a torn ACL during OTA’s and missed four games with a knee injury in 2019.

Henry, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2016. He just finished his four-year, $6.38 million contract that included $3.98 million guaranteed and made a base salary of $1.32 million over the final year of the agreement.

In 2019, Henry appeared in 12 games for the Chargers and caught 55 passes for 652 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 12 tight end out of 67 qualifying players.

We have Henry listed on our Top 50 2020 Free Agents list.
