According to Jason Reid of the Washington Post, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and President/GM Bruce Allen could be headed for a dispute with HC Jay Gruden over QB Robert Griffin III that could leave the team in search of another new head coach next year.
Earlier in the week, Reid had spoken to multiple people within the Redskins’ organization who had informed him that Gruden was “done” with RGIII as his starting quarterback.
“Through three preseason games and five starts in the regular season, Gruden has seen enough to realize that Griffin is at best a long-term project as a pocket passer,” Reid wrote.
Reid added that if the decision to keep RGIII was up to Gruden, Washington would take whatever they could secure for him in an offseason trade.
It wasn’t long after Reid’s article was published that ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported there is a “real chance” that Griffin will return as the Redskins’ starting quarterback before the end of the 2014 season.
Assuming Snyder and Allen remain committed to RGIII as their quarterback next season, a team official tells Reid that the possibility exists that Gruden could be “one and done” with the Redskins.
This would be a somewhat surprising move given that Gruden still has another four years remaining on his guaranteed five-year contract.
However, Snyder reportedly has not come to the conclusion that it’s time to give up on Griffin, despite his consistent struggles to develop as a pocket passer.
Interestingly enough, Reid mentions that Griffin has become “a polarizing figure in the organization who might have even less support in the locker room than in the coaches’ offices.”
This situation is shaping up to be one of the biggest offseason topics, so you can expect to hear even more about Griffin’s future in Washington, and whether or not Gruden will be back as their head coach next season.
Griffin, 24, has another year remaining on his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season.
Washington still has the ability to pick up Griffin’s fifth-year option. However, his struggles this season make it seem unlikely that they will be willing to pick it up given that it will run them close to $15 million for the 2016 season.
In five games, RGIII has thrown for 869 yards while completing 69.7 percent of his passes to go along with just two touchdowns and three interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Griffin as the No. 23 ranked quarterback out of 39.
