Jets In Market For RT Help With Breno Giacomini Likely To Miss Week 1

Jets HC Todd Bowles acknowledged Thursday that RT Breno Giacomini (back) may not be ready in time for their season opener.

“I have no idea,” Bowles said on Thursday, via ESPN.com. “It’s getting close and he hasn’t done anything.”

According to Bowles, they plan to consider external options at right tackle.

“We’ll consider it,” Bowles said of adding someone. “We’ve talked about it and we’ll continue to talk about it. We’ll see how [Ijalana and Qvale] come along and see if we’re going to add anybody.

Regarding his injury, Giacomini said: “It’s not where I need to be to be on the field.” Beyond that, Giacomini estimated that he’s currently at “80-percent speed.”

Rich Cimini mentions that Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale could both be internal candidates, while the 49ers could be a team worth monitoring in the coming weeks, as they have two experienced right tackles in Trent Brown and Anthony Davis.

Giacomini, 30, is in the third year of his four-year, $18 million contract that includes $7 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $4.5 million over the next two years.

In 2015, Giacomini appeared in all 16 games for the Jets and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 66 offensive tackle out of 77 qualifying players.
