Josh McCown Could Be A Stopgap Solution For The Raiders

Scott Bair of CSN Bay Area writes that free agent QB Josh McCown returning to Oakland is something that could make sense for both parties this offseason.

The Raiders have already be linked to a number of speculative free agent targets including Josh FreemanMark Sanchez and Matt Schaub.

HoweverBair believes McCown could be a stopgap solution for Oakland as well as a mentor for some younger developmental QB prospects. Bair even goes as far to say that McCown would be a “perfect fit” for the Raiders.

Last year, McCown basically resurrected his career after Jay Cutler went down with an injury. The Bears have said that they would like to retain McCown, even after they locked Cutler up to a long-term extension, but their current cap situation would prevent them from getting in almost any bidding war.

Conversely, the Raiders have more cap space available to them than any team I’ve ever seen, so money is no object to them if they determine that McCown is the right guy.

We have McCown listed as the No. 58 player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.

  1. I don’t see a scenario where teams get into a bidding war for a QB that isn’t their long term guy. Obviously in Chicago he would be a back up and in Oakland he might start for a year while they develop a QB that they draft but he also might be the back up in Oakland and work with Pryor. I know I am biased toward the Bears but I think that is his best fit.
