Alabama Announces That Lane Kiffin Will Return As Alabama’s OC

Update:

The University of Alabama announced that Lane Kiffin will return as the team’s offensive coordinator next season.

Previous reports has mentioned that Kiffin was considered to be the “front-runner” for the 49ers offensive coordinator job, but it looks like San Francisco will end up hiring someone other than Kiffin.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Alabama OC Lane Kiffin is the “front-runner” for the 49ers offensive coordinator position.

  • Schefter adds that Colts special assistant Rob Chudzinkski is also being considered for the job as well.

Cam Inman of the Mercury News previously reported that Kiffin might consider a return to the NFL, and could be an option for the 49ers, if he were willing to leave his current position under Nick Saban.

However, recent indications were that Chudzinkski was the most likely candidate for the job, so this news is somewhat surprising.

Kiffin would be really interesting addition for San Francisco since he has struggled in his previous stops at Tennessee and USC before turning this around with the Crimson Tide this past year.

Former Redskins and Broncos HC Mike Shanahan has also come up as a potential option for the 49ers’ job as well, but there doesn’t appear to be a lot of traction towards him getting the job as of now.

Other options for the job include former Bears HC Marc Trestman and Charlie Weis.
