Latest On Cowboys, WR Amari Cooper

On Thursday, Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones told reporters that they haven’t had much contact with WR Amari Cooper regarding a new contract.

“There haven’t been a lot of negotiations with Amari (Cooper), period,” Jones said, per Michael Gehlken. “And I’m not free to be able to share why. I think at some point we’ll start that. I don’t know what their parameters will be.”

This has led to some speculation that Cooper and his representatives could be waiting for the Falcons and Julio Jones to finalize their extension before getting serious about negotiations with the Cowboys.

However, a source tells Calvin Watkins that Cooper is “ready to do a deal now” and Jones’ situation with the Falcons has no bearing on his talks with Dallas.

Watkins adds that Cooper has taken a “relaxed approach” with his contract negotiations.

Back in June, Cooper mentioned that he wants to be in Dallas for a long time.

“I really want to play well,” Cooper said via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I think everything starts with that. If you play good football, you’re going to be around a long time. And I do want to be a Dallas Cowboy for a long time.”

Dallas just locked up Ezekiel Elliott to a record deal and still has Dak Prescott to address among others, so it will be interesting to see how things play out between the Cowboys and Cooper.

Cooper, 25, is a former No. 4 overall pick by the Raiders out of Alabama in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Raiders traded him to the Cowboys for a first-round pick midway through the 2018 season.

Cooper played out the final year of his four-year, $22.7 million contract, but his fifth-year option was picked up in 2018. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

In 2018, Cooper appeared in 15 games, six for the Raiders and nine for the Cowboys. In total, he caught 75 passes for 1005 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding Cooper as the news is available.
