Lions Signing QB Josh Johnson

Mike Garafolo reports that the Lions are signing QB Josh Johnson to a contract on Saturday following a tryout.

The Lions also tried out Landry Jones on Saturday, but it appears as though Johnson was the most impressive player.

According to Garafolo, Lions backup QB Tom Savage left their preseason game after his head hit the turf following a hit. As of now, David Fales was the only other quarterback on the Lions’ roster behind Matthew Stafford.

Johnson, 32, is a former fifth-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2012. Since then, Johnson has played for a number of teams including the 49ers, Browns, Bengals, Chargers, Jets, Colts, Bills, Ravens and Giants before catching on with Texans last season and finishing out the year in Houston.

The Raiders signed Johnson to a contract this past March only to cut him loose a few weeks after last year’s draft.

Johnson was selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football before signing on with the Redskins in December.

In 2018, Johnson appeared in four games for the Redskins and completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 590 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown.
