NFC East Notes: Cowboys, Giants, Redskins

Cowboys

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said they didn’t think they had a shot at drafting Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb at No. 17.

“We thought he was a top-10 pick,” Jones said, via NFL.com. “We never really thought we had a chance to get him. Every mock draft we did, we had him long gone.”

Jerry Jones mentioned that they had three trade offers for the pick, but opted to select Lamb instead.

“He trumped them,” Jones said. “He earned the pick.

  • According to Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys “looked hard” at edge rushers and cornerbacks with the No. 17 overall pick and were “never expecting” Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb to reach them.
  • Jones said they liked LSU DE K’Lavon Chiasson: “Yes. In our minds, he was extremely high value. He had outstanding potential. I look for him to have a great career. I don’t mind telling you it was a serious thought. We talked about it.” (Michael Gehlken)

Giants

  • Giants GM Dave Gettleman said they drafted first-round OT Andrew Thomas to finally correct their offensive line: “We want to fix this offensive line once and for all.” (Paul Schwartz)
  • New Giants HC Joe Judge explained that he thinks the Thomas pick will really help QB Daniel Jones and his confidence in the pocket moving forward: “I think this is going to be a tremendous move right now to help Daniel play more confident back there, not that he needs that, but he can sit back and be protected and we’ve got to go ahead and be more stiff. I talk all of the time, you have to run the ball, you have to stop the run, you have to cover kicks, so we’ve got to add to our run blocking as well to give ourselves a chance to get going on the ground.”
  • Zach Rosenblatt mentions that Gettleman was wearing a mask in his home draft-room since he underwent chemotherapy two years ago and also had an IT assistant in his home.
  • Adam Schefter reports that the Dolphins and Chargers never made an offer to trade up with either the Lions at No. 3 or Giants at No. 4 and were “content to stay” at their respective spots.

Redskins

Redskins’ executive Kyle Smith said the organization is “working through” LT Trent Williams‘ situation and mentioned that something could happen anytime within the “next few days.”

“We’re just working through it…something could happen in 5 min, it could happen tomorrow, it might not happen in the next few days. It’s just something we’re trying to work through & cont making calls,” said Smith, via Josina Anderson
