NFC Notes: 49ers, Cardinals QB Competition, Rams

49ers

Regarding the 49ers’ fourth-round G Carver Willis and fifth-round OL Enrique Cruz Jr., San Francisco vice president of personnel Tariq Ahmad said OL Chris Foerster met with both players to determine how they would fit into their system.

“Chris doesn’t need to talk to every offensive lineman who’s on the board,” Ahmad said, via Matt Barrows of The Athletic. “He trusts us a great deal to narrow that list down for him. But there is an element of — for guys who could potentially go into the (offensive line) room — he should speak to those guys and have a feel for them and how they fit in the room.”

Regarding Willis, Ahmad said he was impressed by his intelligence, consistency, and maturity.

He’s a bright, impressive kid,” Ahmad said. “For offensive linemen, that definitely stands out. You’ve got to be consistent, you’ve got to be mature, you can’t make mistakes, you’ve got to do the right thing over and over again.”

As for Cruz, Ahmad said Foerster came away mightily impressed by the lineman’s workout during the pre-draft process.

“Chris loved him on tape,” Ahmad said. “Then Chris came back from the workout even more convicted. And everything we’ve seen so far is really encouraging.”

Cardinals

The Cardinals go into their offseason program with questions about the starting quarterback role with Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew and third-rounder Carson Beck. Arizona HC Mike LaFleur said he’s not concerned about the job right now and hopes they approach their time ahead of training camp productively.

“I’m not really concerned about QB1 right now,” LaFleur said, via Darren Urban of the team’s site. “I’m concerned about these guys reporting (to training camp). Really, I’m concerned about them for the next 40 days and what they are doing … you can’t take steps backwards, and that’s not just the quarterbacks. That’s all these guys.”

LaFleur reiterated that they have a lot of time to decide on their quarterback.

“We don’t play again until September,” LaFleur said. “It is June whatever-it-is. Not worried about (the QB depth chart) right now.”
