NFC Notes: Cardinals, 49ers, Seahawks

Cardinals

49ers

  • Per NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco, 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan says the team will have a decision on K Robbie Gould‘s option before the due date on January 2nd, which is the day before their regular-season finale: “I know we’ll have a decision by then.”
  • Half of Gould’s $4.5 million base salary in 2021 becomes guaranteed on that date, with the other half guaranteeing on April 1 of this coming year. Declining the option would save $3.75 million.
  • John Niyo of the Detroit News doesn’t think 49ers DC Robert Saleh would be able to bring DL coach Kris Kocurek with him to the Lions if he’s hired there as head coach.

Seahawks

Seahawks TE Greg Olsen was designated to return from injured reserve this week after tearing his plantar fascia earlier this season, which makes for a remarkable recovery for the 14-year veteran.

“He’s made an extraordinary recovery to get to this right now,” Seahawks HC Pete Carroll said via John Boyle of the team’s official website. “So we’re going to practice him during the week and see what happens, see how he does.”

When Olsen went down with little to no contact holding his foot, it looked like it might be the end for his NFL career, especially given his history of foot injuries. But it looks like his career isn’t over yet, even if Carroll wouldn’t commit to him playing this week.

“It’s possible. … We’ll see. We don’t have any idea,” Carroll said. “He’s been working out with the guys. We’ve got to see how he does on the practice field.”

  • The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar thinks there’s a good chance the Seahawks bring back DE Carlos Dunlap in 2021, albeit on a restructured deal.
  • Dugar adds an extension for S Jamal Adams is also on the offseason to-do list, ideally during the summer.
  • Dugar notes there’s a good chance the Seahawks will need to franchise tag CB Shaquill Griffin to keep him this offseason. As for RB Chris Carson, Dugar expects him to test the market and see what’s out there.
  • Seahawks OC Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged he’d love to be a head coach and has heard the reported interest in him for this upcoming cycle, but he’s focused on the present: “I’d love to be a head coach. Those things are flattering, but it doesn’t help you beat a really good Washington team [this week].” (Curtis Crabtree)
