NFC Notes: Giants, Panthers, Redskins

Giants

Giants CB Janoris Jenkins came up numerous times in trade rumors before last week’s deadline. Asked about the rumors, Jenkins said he was fine no matter what happened. However, after the deadline passed and Jenkins stayed in New York, the veteran revealed he had assurances from the team that he wouldn’t be dealt.

“I knew what was going on,” Jenkins said via Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. “I had a conversation with somebody. They had already let me know. That’s why I wasn’t even worried about it too much.”

  • According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants had teams inquire about a potential trade for TE Evan Engram but told other teams they weren’t interested in dealing Engram.
  • The Giants announced WR Sterling Shepard would not play Monday night against the Cowboys as he comes back from his second concussion of the season. (Twitter)
  • Shepard has been placed back into the concussion protocol after his symptoms returned Saturday night. Shepard previously had been symptom-free for three weeks. (Art Stapleton)

Panthers

  • According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, a source says “there’s no (specific) timetable for a return” for Panthers QB Cam Newton right now.

Redskins

The NFLPA released the following statement regarding Redskins LT Trent Williams and his medical dispute with the team:

“In our multiple conversations with Trent and his agent, we have considered various options based on the facts, but we also understand that Trent wants to put this all behind him, not relive a painful experience when his life was in danger and move on with his career,” the NFLPA said in its statement. “We are also aware of misinformation being repeated on the NFL’s own network that is not sourced and is only designed to tarnish Trent’s reputation. Our union supports Trent, is protecting his rights and continues to consider potential action if a campaign against him continues.”

  • Per Pro Football Talk, the misinformation the NFLPA is referencing comes from comments made by NFL Media analyst and former Redskins GM Charley Casserly, who said Williams was told three years ago the growth on his head should be biopsied but Williams never made the appointment: “The bottom line is he was advised to go have this thing surgically removed to analyze it three years ago and he never made the appointment.”
  • Casserly added he thinks Williams dispute with the team centers around his contract which includes no guaranteed money.
  • According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, one general manager believes the Redskins will trade Williams at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.
