NFC Notes: Tom Brady, Buccaneers, Falcons, Saints

Tom Brady

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington said on the Get Up! Podcast that Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was close to signing with the Saints during his free-agent candidacy last offseason until Drew Brees chose to return for 2020.

“People still underestimate how close Tom Brady was to signing with the New Orleans Saints up until he ultimately decided on the Bucs,” Darlington said, via Get Up! Podcast. “I know that’s going to be a statement people try to question. It’s the truth. Ultimately, Drew Brees decided to delay his broadcasting career and come back for one more season. The Saints did the right thing by bringing Brees back.”

Darlington believes there is some “regret” around New Orleans that they did not land Brady last year.

“No question in my mind, the Saints, despite knowing that they did what they had to do, there is a little bit of — let’s call it regret — that Tom Brady is not their quarterback.”

Falcons

Falcons HC Arthur Smith believes trading WR Julio Jones to Titans was a “win-win” situation given Atlanta’s cap figure this offseason.

“We knew the issue with the cap and then obviously the cap went down this year, coming off the bizarre year with the pandemic, the cap actually shrunk. So we knew there were going to be some big decisions we would have to make coming up. The way everything worked out, we feel pretty good,” Smith said, via Cris Collinsworth. “We feel like it was a win-win. With the salary cap, and Julio going to Tennessee and us right now being able to solve our short-term issue with the cap.”

Saints

Saints GM Mickey Loomis said that he would be interested in adding a cornerback to the team, and if he had more money to work with he would’ve tried to re-sign CB Janoris Jenkins.

“We’d love to have another corner in the building and create some depth. I like the guys we got, but it’s one of those positions you can never have enough. Honestly, if the cap situation was different, we might have made a different decision with Janoris,” Loomis said, per Nick Underhill. “We’re still looking. If something presents itself that we can boost that position or another one we’ll do everything we can to make the move. But we’re just really limited in terms of where we are with the cap.”
