NFC West Notes: 49ers, Cardinals, Seahawks

49ers

Regarding the trade for WR Emmanuel Sanders, 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said the move is an obvious indication that they’re focused on securing a playoff spot.

I think it says that we’re competing this year to try to get in the playoffs,” Shanahan said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports.

Shanahan says the 49ers are 6-0 and felt a need to improve their receiving corps.

I think that’s pretty obvious with where our record is at right now, but we’re not even halfway through this year. I know we’ve got a long way to go, but this is a decision you’ve got to make before next Tuesday.

Shanahan mentioned the organization felt Sanders could help their offense immediately and are “very well aware” that he is in the final year of his contract.

We feel he’s a guy who can come in and help us a lot this year and we’ll see where it goes for him after that,” Shanahan said. “We’re very well aware that he’ll be a free agent at the end of this year and we’ll see how this year goes, and hopefully we’ll be able to keep him here.”

Cardinals

Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds is confident that he’s capable of managing a heavy workload, given he used to get “30 touches a game” in college.

I used to get 30 touches a game at Fordham, but Fordham play is not the same type of hits as the NFL, I’ll say that,” Edmonds said, via Darren Urban of the team’s official site. “I woke up (Monday) feeling really sore, and I remember what that felt like every week in college. It was cool to have that moment.”

Edmonds went on to say that he is eager to prove he’s a successful NFL running back with Cardinals RB David Johnson (ankle/back) dealing with injuries.

I have goals and aspirations for myself, and whatever they put on my plate, I’m going to happily accept,” Edmonds said. “I’m not going to sit here and lie to you. I prayed for this, I dreamed for this. I always wanted to prove I could play in this league – actually play, and not just be a guy.”

Seahawks

Seahawks’ recently acquired CB Quandre Diggs admitted that he was “blindsided” when the Lions traded him.

I was blindsided by it honestly,” Diggs said, via Brady Henderson of ESPN

Diggs said it was “surprising” to be dealt by Detroit but he’s excited to be a part of the Seahawks.

“It was surprising,” said Diggs. “Super excited, blessed for the opportunity. At the end of the day, God has a plan for me and this is his plan. It was crazy, spending the day with my daughter and my girlfriend and you get news like that. Of course it’s major for the family. But it’s work. It’s part of it. I’m here now. I’m excited. I’m going to miss my guys in Detroit but I’ve got new relationships that I’ve got to build here.

Seahawks HC Pete Carroll referred to Diggs as an “explosive player” able to play in multiple situations.

He’s an explosive player,” Carroll said. “I’ve watched him for years be the kind of guy that throws his body around as well as you can do it. He’s a real hitter and a playmaker. He’s played a lot of situations. He’s played nickel, he’s played a lot of coverage on key tight ends and key matchups. They’ve used him in a number of different ways so we have a big variety of background. I just think he’s been a unique player and he’s one of those guys that I’ve seen for a long time and I’ve liked for a long time and really feel lucky to get him.”

  • Regarding his knee injury, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said he’s “ready to roll” for Week 8: “A little ice on the knee. I’m good. I’m ready to roll.” (Curtis Crabtree)
