NFC West Notes: Cardinals, 49ers, Rams

Cardinals

Cardinals GM Steve Keim was well aware of how much he had already invested in the quarterback position when he was evaluating whether to take QB Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick. Keim had just traded up to draft Josh Rosen in the top ten the year before and ended up selling him for a late second-round pick. However, he said having a player the caliber of Murray at the top of the draft helped him avoid the sunk-cost fallacy.

“You have to make the tough decisions and avoid the outside noise— ‘Why’d you give up on this guy? Why would you trade this guy?’” Keim said via the Ringer’s Robert Mays. “It’s unprecedented. I took [Rosen] in the top 10. I just felt that [Murray] was a generational talent that I just couldn’t pass up.”

49ers

  • 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan says first-round DE Nick Bosa is out of the walking boot and doing work to the side as he recovers from his ankle sprain, per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
  • While 49ers S Jimmie Ward shed the non-contact jersey in practice Wednesday, Shanahan said he’s not ready for full team drills yet and likely won’t participate in those during joint practices with the Broncos. (Wagoner)
  • Veteran TE Levine Toilolo will also not participate in joint practices.
  • 49ers OT Joe Staley (pectoral soreness) only did individual work and TE George Kittle (calf) sat out practice. Kittle is day-to-day per Shanahan. (Wagoner)

Rams

Rams RB Todd Gurley said it was HC Sean McVay‘s decision to not travel with the team to Hawaii for their Week 2 preseason game against the Cowboys.

That’s coach’s decision. I would love to just go to Hawaii, sit back, sip on some pineapple juice and chill at whatever hotel we’re staying at,” said Gurley, via Lindsey Thiry
