NFL Notes: Bills, Browns, Jets, Texans, & Titans

Bills

Charles Robinson writes that even though new Bills OC Greg Roman has experience working with more mobile quarterbacks, Buffalo is likely to place a higher value on who get the job done from within the pocket.

With this in mind, veteran QB Matt Cassel could have the edge over former first-round pick E.J. Manuel.

In the end, this battle may come down to whoever proves to be the more accurate quarterback this summer and during the preseason.

Browns

A league source tells Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports that HC Mike Pettine was the member of the Browns who wanted to move on from QB Johnny Manziel.

A separate source mentions that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, GM Ray Farmer and OC John DeFilippo still believe Manziel can be salvaged.

Even with some support within the organization, Robinson believes Manziel will need to make some “monumental leaps forward” during the preseason in order to push Josh McCown for the starting job.

Jets

According to Charles Robinson, rookie QB Bryce Petty will not be a part of the Jets’ quarterback battle this summer.

This means Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely battle it out for the No. 1 quarterback position. However, Robinson mentions that Smith won’t have the same kind of support from the team now that there’s a new coaching staff and front office in place.

There are a number of factors pointing to Fitzgerald being the guy to beat, as he had his best years while playing under Chan Gailey, who is the Jets new offensive coordinator.

Texans

According to Charles Robinson, it became clear during last year’s training camp that rookie QB Tom Savage was going to be a “bigger project than expected” for the Texans.

Because of this, it’s unlikely that Savage will have any opportunity to supplant either Brian Hoyer or Ryan Mallett as the Texans’ starting quarterback.

Robinson mentions that as long as Mallett can stay healthy, he appears to be the guy to beat for the starting job in Houston.

Titans

Charles Robinson believes Titans QB Zach Mettenberger could make things interesting when it comes to the starting quarterback battle this summer, even after Tennessee used the No. 2 overall pick on Marcus Mariota.

However, Robinson adds that “all indications are that Mariota will have to fail miserably to lose the starting job in the preseason.”
