NFL Notes: Broncos, Chargers, Seahawks

Broncos

Broncos K Brandon McManus got a little more broadcast time than kickers are used to in a game three weeks ago against the Chargers. At the end of the first half, the Broncos had the chance to attempt a 65-yard field goal, which would have broken the NFL record for distance. After Broncos HC Vic Fangio declined to attempt the kick, McManus was spotted storming off the field and angrily ripping his helmet off. That anger has fueled him and he hasn’t missed a kick since.

“At the end of the day, it was a 65-yarder that could have broken the record, but I was thinking we could put 3 points on the board and I knew we had a chance to do that,” McManus said via KUSA’s Mike Klis“But I would say anger definitely helps focus because one, I knew the camera was on me so I couldn’t miss my next kick. So it had a lot to do with anger and focus but it also had a lot to do with I didn’t want to make a fool of myself after doing that.”

  • Mike Klis reports that the Lions and Broncos discussed a trade before this year’s deadline that would have swapped cornerbacks Chris Harris and Darius Slay.
  • However, the Lions wanted move included in the trade than just Harris, so a deal never got close.

Chargers

  • Chargers QB Philip Rivers said when asked about the talk he’s lost it at this point in his career: “None of that’s true. I’ve made some throws this year that have been as good as I’ve made in any year in my career. So, physically and what I’m able to do, is just what I was able to do last year when we were rolling.” (Jeff Miller)
  • When asked if he wants to play next year, Rivers said: “I’m capable enough physically and mentally, there’s no question. Yes, I do want to play football. I do, and that’s how I feel deep down as I stand here.”
