NFL Notes: Chiefs, Cowboys, Jets, Panthers & Patriots

Chiefs

Cowboys

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones mentioned Friday that rookie DE Randy Gregory is unlikely to be back before their Week 6 bye.

“It’s probably unlikely that he makes it before the bye,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s Ben and Skin show [KRLD-FM], via the Dallas Morning News. “But I think very likely that he makes it after the bye.”

Jets

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News believes that the Jets will not be able distribute contract extensions to both DL Muhammad Wilkerson and DL Sheldon Richardson, and will instead have to decide on which of the two to retain.

Mehta could only see the Jets keeping both players if the two elect to sign for “significantly” less money, but does not expect this to happen.

Mehta mentions that the Jets have “leverage” in re-signing both players, since Wilkerson could be given the franchise tag and Richardson is serving a four-game suspension for off-field behavior related matters.

In addition, Mehta writes that Wilkerson becomes “expendable” if first-round rookie DL Leonard Williams becomes the successful player that they envision, and Richardson can return to his previous form while staying out of trouble.

At this point in time, Wilkerson is set to become a free agent at the end of the current season, while Richardson will enter the market at the end of 2016.

Panthers

  • HC Ron Rivera said on Friday that LB Luke Kuechly is “unlikely” to be cleared for Sunday’s game, as he is still going through the league’s concussion protocol. (David Newton)
