Panthers Fire GM Marty Hurney

The Carolina Panthers have announced that GM Marty Hurney has been fired following the team’s 1-5 start to the season.

There’s no question that the Panthers have vastly under-performed this season, but they clearly lack talent all over the place. Hurney has been able to grab a few solid players in the draft, but a good majority of the time his picks turned out to be average or disappointments.

His decision to hand out huge contracts to DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart has come under plenty of criticism. It’s not often that a team invests $80 million in their backfield, especially now that the game has changed towards being a passing league.

You have to wonder whether or not Ron Rivera‘s time in Carolina could also be coming to an end. The Panthers next GM will probably want a fresh start, which means that there’s really no reason to keep Rivera on board when they’re planning on making sweeping changes.
