Panthers Sign LB James Onwualu

The Panthers announced they have signed LB James Onwualu to the active roster.

Carolina had an open roster spot after trading LB Andre Smith to the Bills earlier this week.

Onwualu, 25, signed on with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame back in 2017. He was waived in the final weeks of the 2017 season and signed to the team’s practice squad.

Los Angeles re-signed Onwualu to a one-year futures deal in 2018 but waived him with an injury designation in November. After being cut loose, he signed on with the 49ers’ practice squad and was later promoted to the active roster.

San Francisco waived Onwualu in April, 2019, and he was claimed by the Jaguars. However, Jacksonville waived him with an injury designation last preseason and declined to tender him as a restricted free agent this offseason.

In 2018, Onwualu appeared in five games for the 49ers and recorded two tackles and a forced fumble.
